Converting Inches, Feet and Yards

Three units, two conversion factors, and a lot of avoidable confusion. Here's everything you actually need to move between inches, feet and yards with confidence.

The only numbers to remember

From those, every conversion is a multiply or a divide:

Inches to feet, the right way

Take 100 inches. Divide by 12 and you get 8 with 4 left over — that's 8 feet 4 inches. The remainder is the inches; you don't need a decimal at all. People get tripped up writing 8.33 feet and then wondering what 0.33 of a foot is on a tape (it's about 4″, but "about" isn't good enough for a cut).

Feet-and-inches vs. decimal feet: surveyors and some plans use decimal feet (8.33 ft). Tapes use feet and inches (8 ft 4 in). Mixing the two is a classic source of error — pick one and convert deliberately.

When the fraction comes along for the ride

Real measurements aren't round. Convert 40-1/2 inches to feet: 40 ÷ 12 = 3 ft 4 in, and the 1/2 just stays put — 3 ft 4-1/2 in. The whole-inch part converts; the fraction is unaffected. Keep the fraction as a fraction and you'll never round it away.

Where this matters most

Two places: ordering materials (lumber by the foot, fabric and concrete by the yard) and reading plans drawn in one unit while you measure in another. If you find yourself converting a lot, it's worth letting Totient do it — it switches units without ever turning your fraction into a lossy decimal.
