Tape-Measure Fractions Explained

The fraction marks are where a tape measure stops being obvious. But there are only four of them that matter, and they nest inside each other in a way that's easy to picture once you see it.

One inch, split in half, again and again

Every fraction on a standard tape comes from repeatedly halving the inch:

That's why the lines have different heights: the more times a position has been halved, the shorter its line. The 1/2 line is tall because it's only one split deep; the 1/16 lines are tiny because they're four splits deep.

The conversion table worth memorizing

Everything on the blade in one place. The decimal column is only useful when a plan or a saw scale is in decimal inches — otherwise, stay in fractions.

How to reduce a fraction (and why)

Reducing means dividing the top and bottom by the same number until you can't anymore. 8/16 → divide both by 8 → 1/2. 6/16 → divide both by 2 → 3/8. You reduce for two reasons: a reduced fraction is faster to say and remember, and it's the form everyone else uses, so "three-eighths" communicates instantly where "six-sixteenths" makes people pause.

Rule of thumb: if the top and bottom are both even, you can divide both by 2. Keep going until one of them is odd. 12/16 → 6/8 → 3/4.

Where fractions get hard

Reading a single fraction is easy. The trouble starts when you combine them — adding 3/8 to 9/16, or subtracting a 1/8 saw kerf from a 5/16 gap. You can't touch them until they share a denominator, and sixteenths are the natural common ground for a tape:

That's manageable for one sum. Across a full cut list it's a lot of mental gear-shifting, which is why a decimal phone calculator tempts people — and quietly introduces rounding error.
